Laken's Law

WV §18-34-1.

Through a partnership with Diane Barnett, Laken Morgan's mother and author of Laken's Law, Community Connections has helped create a presentation to assist WV schools in implementing annual fentanyl education for students.

What is Laken's Law?

In honor of her daughter, Laken Morgan, Diane Barnett wrote and presented Laken's Law, also known as the Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Education Act, to the West Virginia Legislature. The proposed bill requires all West Virginia schools to provide annual education to grades 6-12 on the dangers and prevalence of fentanyl and other opioids, addiction resources, and how to respond in an emergency involving potential substance misuse. The bill was signed into law in 2024 and went into effect during the 2024–2025 school year.

The intention behind Laken's Law is to educate youth about the dangers of substance misuse and empower them with the knowledge to make safe, healthy choices when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. Ultimately, the goal is to protect West Virginia children and families from the devastating effects of opioid misuse and poisoning.

Laken's Law Presentation for Educators

Created to help educators access reliable information, educational tools, and discussion points for prevention of fentanyl use or poisoning in youth.

In partnership with Diane, we've created an educational presentation, resource handouts, student surveys, and a facilitator guide, to help educators and administrators easily access the tools and information necessary to adhere to Laken's Law requirements, as well as prepare their students to make informed decisions about their health and safety.

If you or your school are in need of educational resources to fulfill Laken's Law requirements, please fill out the form below to access materials.
