Vapes harm more than your body.

VAPES ARE TRASH.

What Is the "Vapes Are Trash" Program?

Vapes Are Trash is an education and prevention initiative that addresses vaping as both a public health issue and an environmental hazard. The program emphasizes that vape devices are hazardous electronic waste, not harmless consumer products, due to their lithium-ion batteries, nicotine residue, and plastic components.

In Mercer County, the Vapes Are Trash program focuses exclusively on education, prevention, and environmental awareness. It reinforces responsible behavior, discourages youth vaping, and supports school and public health policies through consistent messaging delivered in schools and community settings.

Goals of the Program

  • Increase awareness of the environmental damage caused by discarded vape devices

  • Educate youth and the community about health risks associated with vaping

  • Reduce youth vaping and misuse through prevention-focused education

  • Promote responsible behavior and proper disposal practices

  • Support school and public health policies with clear, consistent messaging

How the Vape Device Disposal Program Will Work

The Vape Device Disposal Program provides the infrastructure needed to safely manage vape waste across Mercer County.

  • Secure disposal boxes will be placed in all county schools and at the Mercer County Health Department in supervised locations.

  • Vape devices will be collected in lockable, clearly labeled containers designed for electronic waste.

  • When boxes are full, designated staff will notify the Mercer County Solid Waste Authority, which will collect and transport the materials on a scheduled basis.

  • Collected devices will be handled and recycled through the Mercer County Landfill’s e-waste system, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • Regular reporting will track collection totals and program outcomes to ensure accountability and transparency.

How the Two Programs Work Together

The Vapes Are Trash education campaign reduces youth vaping and improper disposal behaviors, while the Vape Device Disposal Program ensures that confiscated or surrendered devices are managed safely and responsibly. Together, they create a comprehensive, county-wide approach that protects public health, the environment, and community safety.
